Magnetic target selection for subsea proximity switches
Specify the target and installed approach geometry alongside the switch to make position feedback repeatable.
Treat the target as part of the sensing assembly
Record the magnet reference, polarity or orientation where relevant, carrier and nearby ferrous parts. The switching distance depends on the selected switch and target arrangement. Do not transfer a catalogue distance from a different magnet, housing or approach direction.
Review the complete tolerance range
Identify the closest and furthest installed approach, lateral offset and mechanical play. Consider how the moving member passes the sensing area rather than checking one static point alone. Define an acceptance check for the installed assembly and obtain the required operating and release positions for that configuration.
Information to include in your enquiry
Use the following checklist to capture the configuration. Where a value or drawing is not available, identify it as an open requirement for the engineering review.
| Requirement | What to record |
|---|---|
| Target identity | Magnet part number, carrier material and orientation |
| Geometry | Approach direction, lateral offset and target sweep |
| Tolerance | Mounting stack-up, mechanism play and adjustment range |
| Verification | Operating / release position check with the selected assembly |
Confirm the complete configuration
Confirm the final part and assembly numbers, documentation revision and agreed acceptance requirements with the quotation. Product imagery is useful for identifying the concept; approved drawings and configuration-specific records define the supplied assembly.
A magnetic target is part of the sensing arrangement
For the Nano M12 switch, use the MT-01 magnetic target for the specified 12 mm sensing range. A plain steel insert is not a substitute for this magnet. Mount the target on the moving member so its closest and furthest positions remain within the intended switching arrangement. Check the installed support material; ferrous-steel supports are not recommended for this Nano magnetic configuration.
| Check | Record before ordering |
|---|---|
| Target | Part number, orientation and how it is retained |
| Approach | End-on or passing motion shown on a drawing |
| Tolerance | Maximum and minimum gap including play, flex and thermal movement |
| Surroundings | Mounting material and nearby magnetic components |
| Control state | Required contact state at each position, including target absent |
Specification questions
What should I provide to start an engineering review?
Send the application and movement description, environmental conditions, control-system interface and any existing drawings or part references. Include the required cable route and the points that still need to be resolved.
Can I embed the target in a fibreglass component?
A magnetic target can be considered for a non-metallic moving component. The installation must retain and protect the magnet, preserve its orientation and keep the total target-to-sensor distance within the specified sensing arrangement. Include the covering thickness in the gap assessment.
