Selecting underwater connector mating conditions
Specify where and how the connector will be mated, alongside the electrical and mechanical interface.
State the mating operation explicitly
Describe whether mating takes place in air or underwater, whether circuits are energised, and the cleaning and inspection procedure. Do not infer underwater mating capability from a connector being suitable for immersion once connected. Confirm the permitted operation for the exact interface.
Review the complete mated pair
Identify plug and receptacle references, contact arrangement, locking method and cable exits. Check the supplied combination rather than relying on visual similarity. DepthLink connector family reference pages support a specification discussion; they do not establish blanket cross-brand mating compatibility.
Information to include in your enquiry
Use the following checklist to capture the configuration. Where a value or drawing is not available, identify it as an open requirement for the engineering review.
| Requirement | What to record |
|---|---|
| Operation | Dry or underwater mating; electrical state and procedure |
| Pair | Exact plug and receptacle references and locking arrangement |
| Electrical | Contacts, signal / power duty and cable allocation |
| Environment | Required operating pressure, immersion and maintenance |
Confirm the complete configuration
Confirm the final part and assembly numbers, documentation revision and agreed acceptance requirements with the quotation. Product imagery is useful for identifying the concept; approved drawings and configuration-specific records define the supplied assembly.
Operating underwater and mating underwater are different requirements
Choose the connector pair around its documented operating and mating conditions. A subsea assembly may be intended to be connected dry before immersion. Do not infer wet-mating capability from the word subsea, the connector size or its external-pressure rating.
| Interface check | Required evidence |
|---|---|
| Mechanical compatibility | Exact mating references, keying, locking and installation envelope |
| Electrical compatibility | Contact assignment, voltage, current and insulation requirements |
| Mating procedure | Manufacturer instructions for dry or wet mating and permitted electrical state |
| In-service conditions | Pressure and temperature for the complete mated assembly |
| Maintenance | Cleaning, inspection, protective caps and replacement access |
Specification questions
What should I provide to start an engineering review?
Send the application and movement description, environmental conditions, control-system interface and any existing drawings or part references. Include the required cable route and the points that still need to be resolved.
Are Nano and Micro connector names sufficient to order a mating cable?
No. Include the exact sensor or connector reference, gender, contact count and pin assignment. Similar size or family terminology does not prove that two connector halves mate or have the same operating limits.
